Forklift Thorough Examinations
If you own or operate a forklift, it is your legal obligation to ensure it holds a valid Thorough Examination report.
A forklift thorough examination is not the same as regular maintenance, so you need one whether or not you’ve just had the truck serviced.
Legislation states that a basic forklift truck being used for less than 40 hours a week must undergo a thorough examination at least every 12 months. Where the forklift is used to lift people, or fitted with lifting accessories, a fork truck inspection is required at least every 6 months.
However, many factors can alter how often your forklift needs to be thoroughly examined, from hours used, to the use of attachments; to find out how regularly you need to get your forklift examined click here.

What is a Thorough Examination?
A thorough examination is similar to an MOT, but more detailed and specific to lifting equipment.
Our forklift thorough examinations are carried out with safety as the priority and cover two key areas of health and safety legislation.
The formal legal requirement for the thorough examination of forklift trucks is set out in the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), Regulation 9. This applies specifically to the truck’s lifting mechanism.
In addition, under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), Regulation 6, employers have a duty to carry out regular forklift examinations to ensure work equipment remains safe to use. This includes inspections beyond the lifting components alone.
Who should you choose us for your Thorough Inspections?
There are many companies that offer thorough examinations, so choosing the right provider can be difficult. Until recently, this was a challenging decision, but the materials handling industry now operates an accredited national scheme that provides real peace of mind — CFTS.
CAM Fork Lift Trucks Limited is an accredited member of the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) and is fully approved to carry out and manage all thorough examination requirements for your materials handling equipment. We can provide individual forklift thorough examination inspections or a fully managed programme to ensure all fork truck inspections are completed at the required intervals. This hands-on approach helps support your legal responsibilities under current UK legislation.
All thorough examination inspections are carried out by our own formally accredited engineers and completed to the required standards set by the governing body, Consolidated Fork Truck Services (CFTS). All inspections are approved to HSE-recognised standards for forklift examinations and associated materials handling equipment.
